Typical mulch weights
| Mulch | Per 2 cu ft bag | Per cubic yard | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood mulch (hardwood, cedar, cypress, dyed) | about 25–45 lb | about 400–800 lb fairly dry | Wet mulch can top 1,000 lb a yard |
| Pine bark nuggets and fines | toward the light end | toward the light end | Bark is lighter than dense hardwood |
| Fresh wood chips | n/a (rarely bagged) | similar to wood mulch, heavier when green | Green chips hold a lot of sap and water |
| Rubber mulch | about 16–22 lb per 0.8 cu ft bag | about 550–750 lb | Doesn’t absorb much water |
| Pine straw | sold by the bale | n/a | Bales are light; sizes vary a lot |
These are ranges, not specifications. The figure printed on the bag or quoted by your supplier always beats a general range.
Why the same mulch weighs different amounts
Moisture is the main reason. Wood fibers soak up water, so the same bag can weigh noticeably more after sitting in the rain than when it left the plant. Bulk piles stored outdoors are often wetter in the middle than on the surface.
Wood type matters too. Dense hardwoods weigh more than bark, cedar or cypress for the same volume.
Particle size changes how tightly it packs. Fine, double-ground mulch packs denser than chunky nuggets.
Working out weight from volume
weight = cubic yards × pounds per cubic yard
pounds per cubic foot = pounds per cubic yard ÷ 27
Example: you’re picking up 1.5 yards of shredded hardwood in a pickup. Use the heavy end of the range to be safe: 1.5 × 800 = 1,200 lb. If it’s been raining all week, plan for more. If your truck’s payload on the door-jamb sticker is 1,500 lb, and you and a passenger weigh 350 lb together, you have about 1,150 lb left for mulch, which is cutting it close. Take two trips or have it delivered.
Hauling mulch yourself
- Pickup trucks. Mulch is bulky before it’s heavy, so a bed may fill up before you reach the payload limit. Still check the payload sticker, especially with wet mulch, and tarp the load so it doesn’t blow out on the highway.
- Trailers. Check the trailer’s rated capacity and your vehicle’s towing and tongue-weight limits.
- Cars. A sedan or small SUV can usually manage a handful of bags. A dozen or more 2 cu ft bags can add several hundred pounds, which is more than many people expect.
- Pallets. A pallet of bagged mulch often weighs a ton or more. That’s a delivery job.
Weight per bag size
At about 15 to 22 lb per cubic foot (a middle range for fairly dry wood mulch), bag weights scale like this:
| Bag size | Approximate weight |
|---|---|
| 1.5 cu ft | about 22–33 lb |
| 2 cu ft | about 30–44 lb |
| 3 cu ft | about 45–66 lb |
Wet mulch can be heavier, and some bark products lighter. A bigger bag is cheaper per cubic foot, but it can be awkward to lift, so it’s worth thinking about who is doing the carrying.
Does weight affect how much mulch I need?
No. Coverage depends on volume. A yard of wet mulch covers the same 108 sq ft at 3 inches as a yard of dry mulch; it’s just harder to move. Use the mulch calculator for quantity and this page only for hauling and lifting.
For anything weight-critical, such as a roof garden, a deck or a trailer near its limit, ask the supplier for the weight of their product and allow for it being wet.
Questions people ask
- How much does a bag of mulch weigh?
- A 2 cubic foot bag of wood mulch often weighs about 25 to 45 pounds. A bone-dry bag can be lighter and a bag left out in the rain heavier. Many bags print a weight on the label or product page.
- How much does a yard of mulch weigh?
- Wood mulch is roughly 400 to 800 pounds per cubic yard when fairly dry. Wet mulch can go past 1,000 pounds. Ask the supplier for the weight of their product if you need a firm number.
- How much does a yard of rubber mulch weigh?
- Product listings put rubber mulch at roughly 20 to 28 pounds per cubic foot, which is about 550 to 750 pounds per cubic yard. It doesn't soak up water the way wood does.
- Can a pickup truck carry a yard of mulch?
- Usually, yes. A full-size pickup can generally carry 1 to 2 yards of fairly dry wood mulch, but check the payload on the door-jamb sticker and remember wet mulch weighs much more.
- Why is mulch sold by the yard and not by weight?
- Because what you care about is coverage, which depends on volume, and because the weight of the same mulch changes a lot with moisture. Rubber mulch is the exception that's sometimes sold by weight.
