How to work out the cost of mulch
bulk cost = cubic yards (rounded up to the half yard) × price per yard + delivery
bag cost = number of bags × price per bag
installed cost = bulk cost + cubic yards × labor per yard
Worked example
A 30 × 10 ft bed at 3 inches needs 300 × 3 ÷ 324 = 2.78 cubic yards, or 75 cu ft. Suppose (these are example numbers, not real prices):
- Bulk at $40 a yard with a $60 delivery fee: round up to 3 yards → 3 × $40 + $60 = $180
- Bags at $4 for 2 cu ft: 75 ÷ 2 = 37.5 → 38 bags × $4 = $152
- Here bags win by $28, because delivery is a big share of a small order.
Double the bed to 600 sq ft and you need 5.56 yards. Bulk: 6 yards × $40 + $60 = $300. Bags: 75 bags × $4 = $300. They tie. Any bigger and bulk pulls ahead. The break-even point depends entirely on your local prices, which is why the calculator asks for them.
Comparing bag prices with yard prices
A bag price looks small next to a yard price, but they measure different amounts. Convert the bag price to a price per cubic yard:
| Bag size | Bags per yard | Price per yard = |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 cu ft | 18 | bag price × 18 |
| 2 cu ft | 13.5 | bag price × 13.5 |
| 3 cu ft | 9 | bag price × 9 |
Enter only a bag price in the calculator and it shows this per-yard figure for you.
What drives the price of mulch
- Type. Plain shredded hardwood and wood chips are usually the economy options. Dyed mulch, cedar, cypress, pine bark nuggets and pine straw vary by region. Rubber mulch costs far more per yard but isn’t replaced every year. See types of mulch.
- Where you live. Mulch is made from local wood waste and bark. A product that’s cheap near its source can cost more where it has to be trucked in.
- Bulk vs bag. Bags carry packaging, handling and retail markup. Bulk carries a delivery fee.
- Delivery. Usually a flat fee by distance, sometimes waived over a certain order size. Many yards also let you pick up with your own truck or trailer.
- Minimum order. Some suppliers won’t deliver less than a set number of yards.
- Season. Spring is peak season; stores often run bag sales then, and landscape yards get busy.
- Tax. Ask whether quotes include sales tax.
What to ask a supplier
- What’s the price per cubic yard for the mulch I want?
- Is there a delivery fee, and is there a minimum order for delivery?
- Do you sell by the half yard?
- How many yards does one truck load hold? Will a big order come in two loads?
- Can you drop it on a tarp, and where can the truck safely park?
Mulch installation cost
If you’re hiring the work out, quotes usually come in one of three forms:
- Per yard installed. Mulch, delivery and spreading in one figure per yard. Easy to compare: multiply by your yardage from the mulch calculator.
- Materials plus labor. A mulch price per yard, plus labor per yard or per hour. Enter the labor per yard in the calculator above to see the installed total.
- Flat price. One number for the job. Ask how many yards it includes so you can check it against your own measurement.
Ask what’s included. Edging, weeding, pre-emergent weed control, removing old mulch and hauling away debris can all be extras.
No prices are quoted on this site, because mulch prices swing too much by region and season to be useful as a national number. Your local quotes are the only figures that matter, and the calculator turns them into a total.
Questions people ask
- How much is mulch by the yard?
- It varies by region, by type and by supplier, so call two or three local landscape yards. Ask for the price per cubic yard, the delivery fee, any minimum order and whether tax is included, then enter those figures in the calculator.
- How much is a bag of mulch?
- Bag prices vary by store, brand, size and season, and holiday sales are common. To compare a bag price with a bulk price, multiply it by 13.5 for 2 cubic foot bags or by 9 for 3 cubic foot bags. That gives the cost per cubic yard.
- Is bulk mulch cheaper than bags?
- Per cubic yard, bulk is usually cheaper. Delivery fees and minimum orders can make bags cheaper for a small job. The calculator compares both totals for your beds.
- How much does mulch installation cost?
- Landscapers price it per yard installed, per hour or as a flat job price. Ask whether the quote includes the mulch, delivery, edging, weeding and removal of old mulch. Enter a per-yard labor figure in the calculator to see the installed total.
- How much is 20 yards of mulch?
- Twenty times your supplier's price per yard, plus delivery. Some suppliers give a lower per-yard price on large orders, and 20 yards may need more than one truckload, so ask.
